Choruses

Under the direction of Chorus Director Simon Halsey, the renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Choruses cater for all ages from seven to seventy. This unique choral set up is regularly in demand across the globe, working with the CBSO and many other leading orchestras in concerts, recordings, radio and TV broadcasts.

City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus

Since its debut in 1974, the City of Birmingham Symphony Chorus - a body of ‘unpaid professionals' conducted by Simon Halsey - has become one of the finest of its kind, performing regularly with the CBSO and in regular demand from other world-class orchestras.

"This musical organisation represents the large choir at its impressive best, a brilliantly versatile interpreter of great music. There is enormous power here, but there is also the ability to speak softly, to create colour, shading, nuance and subtle suggestion... it is as impressive in a whisper as it is at full volume."

Christopher Dafoe, Vancouver Sun

City of Birmingham Symphony Youth Chorus

The City of Birmingham Symphony Youth Chorus was formed in 1994 and is now established as one of the country's most acclaimed youth choirs, performing regularly with the CBSO and other leading orchestras. The CBSYC consists of two separate choruses, both conducted by Shirley Court.  The Senior Youth Chorus is open to girls aged between 13 and 21 (school years 9+) and the Junior Youth Chorus to girls and boys between the ages of 8 and 12 (school years 4 to 8).  The two Choruses perform both independently of each other and as a massed Youth Chorus, singing on their own, as well as with many other famous choirs and orchestras.
