This month
Sakari Oramo gave his final concerts as Music Director of the CBSO this month, after 10 years at the helm. Tommy Pearson talks exclusively to Sakari about the last decade in Birmingham; how he has shaped the sound of the orchestra, his successful projects such as Floof!, IgorFest and the Elgar oratorios, handing over to Andris Nelsons, and his memories of his time as music director. Then it’s off to the party, as the orchestra, chorus, admin staff, friends and family bid farewell to Sakari. Former Chairman of the CBSO and now Chairman of the BBC, Sir Michael Lyons, Chief Music Critic of the Birmingham Post Christopher Morley, CBSO Chief Executive Stephen Maddock and Andris Nelsons all pay tribute to Sakari. And, of course, there are the speeches. A fitting celebration for our departing MD.
Also in the podcast, looking ahead to a special CBSO and Chorus concert on 21st June, Stephen Johnson profiles Vaughan Williams’s A Sea Symphony.
