Michael Tippett’s 1956 Piano Concerto was the second commission from the Feeney Trust, and it is a typically lyrical work which also gives great opportunities for the soloist - here a dynamic young champion of Tippett’s music - to display his virtuosity. It is prefaced by music from a British composer who, like Tippett, was hugely influenced by the centuries of English music that had preceded him. And we end with the most famous symphony by the composer whose music was a lifelong inspiration to Tippett - and indeed the rest of us!
