Ilan Volkov, Music Director of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra, takes the helm of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and begins this concert with Elgar’s enchanting Serenade for Strings. Steven Osborne, one of Britain’s foremost musicians, performs Benjamin Britten’s atmospheric and powerful Piano Concerto. “[He] unleashed a spectacular performance … packed to the roof with fun, wit, fireworks and dazzling pianism…” said The Herald. Jean Sibelius’s wonderfully dark tone poem, The Bard, opens the second half, followed by his Sixth Symphony. The most polished of Sibelius’s symphonies, it is remarkable for its shimmering light and shade, and the Finnish composer said it reminded him of “the scent of the first snow”, pristine and delicate.
