Forget the viola jokes; today, the "Cinderella of the strings" gets the last laugh. The gorgeous, dusky sound of massed violas is like velvet for the ears, and it's inspired some truly beautiful music. York Bowen's dreamy, darkly romantic Phantasy Quartet is one of the lost gems of English chamber music but that's just part of this engaging programme, which includes transcriptions of famous classics, and a few surprises too.
